Fugitive sex offender found at Fort Ridgely State Park

Posted: Updated:

Corrections agents have apprehended a level 3 predatory sex offender who failed to check in with his supervising agent after locating him at a Nicollet County campsite on Tuesday night.

The Department of Corrections had issued a warrant for Rommel Heinrich Fritz on July 21 after his supervising agent discovered that he was not at his approved residence in the Sandstone, Minn., area.

A tip from a member of the public led authorities to a remote campsite at the Fort Ridgely State Park. He surrendered without incident at 7:25 p.m.

Fritz was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct against an underage girl and was released from a Rush County correctional facility on June 11, 2012, after serving 12 years and 7 months of his 20-year sentence. The conditions of his sentence require him to remain on conditional supervised release for the rest of his life.

A hearing will be held in the next 10 days to determine whether Fritz will be allowed to remain in the community under Intensive Supervised Release or if he will be returned to prison.
