The Walker Art Center is preparing for Free First Saturday on Aug. 3, one of the venue's most popular events that draws fans of sculpture, dance and other crafts.
In the Sculpture Garden, visitors can catch a choreographed dance called "Talk" based on Senegalese wrestling. The dance itself mimics the style of wrestling and plays out as a back-and-forth match of sorts.
Free First Saturday also features different artists, notably Jim Proctor, a plant sculptor offering a spot where kids can make their own plant sculptures. The Walker tries to create challenging activities to create bonds between parents and kids, allowing both to actively participate.
Fritz Haeg is a local artist working with a traveling rug that expands as it moves: The rug has traveled to museums all over the country, and grows with donors' old textiles and clothing are woven together at each venue the rug descends upon. Visitors can also help crochet the rug, putting his or her own personal trademark on the piece.
