Stretching Your Dollar: Back-to-school clothes

ATLANTA -

Pens and pencils are important for back to school. But, many kids are far more concerned with the clothes they'll be wearing when they return for a new school year.

And, there's one place you'll be guaranteed to hundreds of dollars on your son or daughter's back-to-school clothes – the local thrift store.

Thrift stores can be the key to getting your student the brand names they want without draining your bank account in the process. For example, the Value Village – with numerous locations, including downtown Atlanta, Roswell, Marietta and Decatur – is a great place to start.

Thrift stores are great in general, not only from the clothing perspective, but the handbags, the belts. you can get really great new or used belts, handbags, anything."

"You can get items that are vintage, and you can also get items that are brand new, still with the tags on them."

And, the savings don't stop at the thrift store.

Stylist and thrift master Daniel Troppy says there are many alternatives to the pricey department stores. Estates sales are just one option. Great finds are often made at estate sales. But, remember these can be hit or miss and might call for a bit more time and patience.

But, the pay-off can often be very, very worth it. It's not uncommon for a thrift store to also have sale prices, so the savings just get bigger.

Also, don't forget that Georgia's tax-tree holiday is getting closer – August 9 and 10.
