Rebuilt boardwalk reopens on Long Beach

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The City of Long Beach reopened part of its rebuilt boardwalk Saturday after it was destroyed after Superstorm Sandy.

A four-block stretch near the intersection of National Boulevard and West Broadway was opened to beachgoers.

The new boardwalk was rebuilt with Brazilian hardwood and concrete to withstand the force from future storms. A retaining wall was also put in place to prevent sand underneath the boardwalk from being swept away by a storm surge.

In honor of the former boardwalk, it will feature old-time benches, light poles and fixtures to provide a nostalgic feel.
