Autumn in July? A chilly Saturday morning

Posted: Updated:

It may not have been cold by Minnesota standards Saturday morning, but it was certainly cool even for us during the month of July.

You have to go back to 2009 to find a morning in July that was colder in the Metro. Some records were also broken in the wee hours of the day including Marshall, Hutchinson, Mankato, Alexandria, Red Wing, and Eau Claire, WI.

Starting off the day cool and we will likely stay cool as high temperatures will be flirting with record lows through the day, especially if extra clouds and showers float their way into the picture. Tonight will be no different with vast areas of the Upper Midwest closing in on record lows from Fargo, Kansas City, Indianapolis, to Cleveland, and right here in the Metro.

IF we can drop to the 40's, it will be the first time in 15 years that we have been that cool in the month of July. There are many factors that determine an overnight low, but one of the major ones is cloud cover. Remember that clouds act like a blanket and keep the surface temperatures warmer, so the longer the clouds stick around tonight, the higher the low temperature will likely be.

Stay tuned, there will be a complete recap of the weekend's cool weather right here at on Sunday AND check out the Fox9 Morning Show Sunday from 7-8am and 9-10am to see if we dropped into the 40's.
