New legislation proposes use of red light cameras in Michigan

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Two bills introduced in the state legislature would allow cities to install red light cameras at certain intersections where drivers are prone to running red lights.

Under the proposed legislation, should you run a red light, the camera would snap a picture of your license plate. An officer would then review the photo and send a ticket in the mail.

Some think the cameras could cut down on crime, while others say Detroit has bigger problems to worry about.

At a press conference Thursday, Detroit Police Chief James Craig expressed support for the idea.

"We get your face, we get your plate, and it generates a lot of revenue for the city," he said.

However, opponents say the cameras go too far. Some even think they are an invasion of privacy.
