Vandals damage park honoring veterans

LULA, Ga. -

Vandals have damaged a park honoring veterans in a small Northeast Georgia town. City workers discovered the vandalism Thursday morning in Lula.

Veterans Park in Lula was dedicated four years ago. It has the names of 300 veterans engraved in bricks.

The vandals struck the outer walls with black spray paint.

Norm Harrop, an Air Force veteran and Lula City Councilman, says it's a desecration.

"I think we owe it to every veteran's name on the wall, they are the ones that are being disgraced by this," said Harrop.

And many veterans in the area have expressed outrage.

The park, complete with a fountain, is a focal point in this town of 2,500 residents northeast of Gainesville.

The town tried pressure washing and chemical applications but could not remove the paint. Harrop says an Athens company has now volunteered to clean the walls free of charge.

"Most of the money that built the park was donated and we never had anything like this before," Harrop said.

The town's historical society has offered a $500 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction for the damage.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office is looking into the vandalism. A spokesman told FOX 5 that investigators have a couple of leads in the case.
