Minnesota Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer may soon get to meet his own set of twins now that his wife has gone into labor.
Mauer was scratched from the lineup shortly before Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels to fly home to be with his wife Maddie, who went into labor after 9 p.m.
Chris Herrmann wasn't expected to play until Mauer had to fly home, but Herrmann hit his first career grand slam in a 10-3 Twins win in the 10th inning.
Mauer is 11-for-14 against the Angels this season, including three hits Monday. While his absence was likely a relief as the Twins blew their early lead, Ryan Doumit hit a tie-breaking double and the Twins ultimately used their seven-run 10th inning for the win.
Maddie Mauer's original due date was Aug. 31, but it seems these twins don't want to miss any more of the 2013 season.
The last time Maddie Mauer was seen in public was at Justin Morneau's charity event earlier in the summer, but she was placed on bed rest last week. The Mauers were married in December.
