Popular Spanish-Language Radio Show 'Piolin' Cancelled By Univision

Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / FOX News Latino) The Spanish radio market has been known to be competitive and fickle. But who could have thought that a nationally syndicated success would be cancelled so abruptly?

Univision Radio has cancelled their long-running and widely popular morning show, "Piolín por la Mañana," hosted by Eddie Sotelo, the local news media is reporting.

Univision has not given a reason for the cancellation but confirmed the program was nixed and no replacement has been named.

Sotelo, who has been called the Spanish-language Howard Stern, has not commented on the cancellation. His Twitter handle has been inactive for two days.

His show drew many big-name celebrities, but it grew in prominent and influence when he landed President Barack Obama in 2010, and later First Lady Michelle Obama. He interviewed Obama three times.

The show was unlike anything heard in English radio, a madhouse format that often surprised the audience with wacky voices and sometimes blaring blow horns.

Sotelo's show reached 3.5 million people every morning. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame last June.

A native of the Mexican state of Jalisco, Sotelo arrived in the United States as a teenager without working papers.

He is widely credited with using his program to urge his listeners to turn out for the massive pro-immigration-reform marches that took place in Los Angeles and other cities in the mid-2000s.

According to the Times, Sotelo's show recently began taking a hit in the rating as other Spanish-language radio programs began cutting into his audience. Ricardo "El Mandril" Sanchez's program of regional Mexican music on rival station KLAX-FM last month jumped up to the No. 1 spot in the L.A.-Orange County market, according to Arbitron.

Sotello has recently branched out into acting, appearing on the now-cancelled TNT drama "Hawthorne," HBO's "East Bound & Down," and Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua."
