Hate crime beating on Long Island

Four people are under arrest in what police are calling a hate crime attack on Long Island.

It happened at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in Babylon. Suffolk County Police say four men were walking on Deer Park Ave. when they asked two men for directions to the train station.

Police say the four then started to punch, kick and shove the victims while using sexual slurs. A witness called 911 during the attack.

The four attackers were arrested at the scene and the victims were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

One victim was treated and released. The other victim was admitted and was listed in serious condition.

Police arrested Gregory Gilbert, 20, Shane Buckley, 18, and Nicholas Battaglia, 18, and Justin Buckley, 17. All of the suspects live in Oceanside.

The three adults were charged with with assault as a hate crime and gang assault 2nd Degree. Justin Buckley was charged with assault as a hate crime.

The Buckley's are brothers.  Their older brother, U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Greg Buckley, Jr., was killed last year in Afghanastan in an attack by an Afghan police officer who opened fire in a coalition base.

    Health officials say six Long Island beaches that were closed for one day have reopened to bathing. The Nassau County beaches were closed Monday due to storm water runoff that could negatively impact bacterial levels. The beaches were: Laurel Hollow Beach, Morgan Beach, North Hempstead Beach Park, Sea Cliff Village Beach, Tappen Beach and Theodore Roosevelt Beach.

    Reminder for drivers that as children head back to school in Nassau County so too, will the speed cameras in school zones. Officials say speed cams will be fully operational at 25 locations this week. That will more than double eventually.
