Monsoon causes downpour, strong winds across valley

Updated:
PHOENIX -

A monsoon brought lots of rain and wind overnight and into Saturday morning, leading to a soggy northwest valley and some down trees and wind-whipped streets.

Rain and wind overnight presented a challenge for Phoenix Police.

At 19th Avenue and the Loop 101 westbound on-ramp, an officer directed traffic after a traffic signal was blown down by the wind.

A bit south on 19th Avenue and Dunlap, cars eased their way through a watery intersection.

The storm hit hard in the area.

A tree a couple of blocks away, at 23rd Avenue and Alice, was toppled in a heap. It was a victim of pounding wind and rain.

"I look outside and I see all this wind and then I come here this morning and see all these trees laying around," said Cole Bascman, a neighbor.

It was a scene repeated all over the northwest valley.

More downed trees could be seen near Happy Valley Road and 19th Avenue.

It was all a display of mother nature's power.

"It sounded like a hurricane, a small hurricane, it was pretty strong. Last night the rain was pushing me back in that stuff," said Jimmy Whitebody, a neighbor.
