Minn. man charged in sledgehammer beating of dog

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Savage, Minn. man appeared in court Friday morning on animal cruelty charges after he allegedly bludgeoned his golden retriever to death with a sledgehammer for going to the bathroom on the floor.

"It's an animal, not a human," the man's defense attorney argued in a request for reduced bail.

Bail will stand at $40,000.

Rudolph Poppe, 71, was arrested last week outside his home in Savage, surrounded by shocked and distraught neighbors as he stood, with a blood-spattered shirt, near the severely injured dog.

According to the charges, the dog had a plastic bag around its head and suffered a crushed skull. It was taken to a veterinary clinic and put down.

Protesters gathered outside the courthouse in Shakopee, Minn. on Friday morning to call for a maximum sentence.
