Bus Video Of Deadly Collapse 'Shocking And Sad,' Councilman Says

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Seeing SEPTA bus surveillance video of  the deadly Market Street building collapse is a chilling sight for Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney.

"It's shocking and sad," he said with a heavy sigh.

Six people died and more than a dozen were injured when the concrete wall of a four-story building collapsed on top of the Salvation Army store right next to it.

The bus' camera captured the June 5 morning mayhem as it traveled east at 22nd and Market streets. On the video you see the wall come crashing down. People started running for their lives as dust and debris started flying. The force was so strong you can see one person was knocked to the ground.

Backhoe operator Sean Benschop has been charged with manslaughter and other charges in  what's being called a botched demolition.

"There's no need in the world to have this fly-by-night, 'Three Stooges' demolition company these guys were involved in," said Kenney.

He's part of a council investigative committee looking into the deadly Center City building collapse.

The goal is to fix the city's checks and balances and open the lines of communication between all city departments -- especially Revenue and License and Inspections -- so that deadly demolition accidents don't happen again.

"SEPTA's cameras help, but the technology that would help most is a hardware and software system that allows Revenue and L & I to communicate instantly."
