Woman, child killed in hit-and-run accident in Lilburn

LILBURN, Ga. -

Police are expected to release more details about a hit-and-run driver that killed a woman and young girl walking along Lawrenceville Highway Thursday evening.

The woman and child, who was said to be young girl about 10 years old, were walking on the sidewalk of Lawrenceville Highway when the driver of a large white pick-up truck apparently jumped a curb and struck them.

Lilburn Police Capt. Thomas Bardugon said, "Officers arrived on the scene and they found an adult female and a child, approximately a 10 year old female, on the side of the road there. The vehicle had struck them and left the scene and continued southbound on Lawrenceville Highway

Lilburn police said that they're still trying to determine exactly what happened, but preliminary information indicates that the truck that struck the pedestrians was trying to pass a car as it traveled southbound past Harbins Road on Lawrenceville Highway.

"As it came back into its lane, for whatever reason, it left the roadway, got up on the sidewalk, struck the pair, the pedestrians that were walking down the way and continued on," Capt. Bardugon said.

Police say the male driver and a female passenger were stopped about a quarter-mile from the accident scene at a check cashing place. They were taken to police headquarters for questioning.

"As far as the accident itself, it's probably is only the driver that's facing charges there," said Bardugon. "I don't know what the entire investigation is going to lead to. I don't know if the person was impaired."

Authorities say at least four eyewitnesses saw what happened and can help them piece together the investigation.

It was not clear if the girl and the woman were related, police said. Police have not released the names of the woman and young girl struck by the truck or the names of the people who were in the truck.

Regarding charges, Capt. Bardugon said, "The driver's probably looking at least failure to maintain lane, hit-and-run, vehicular homicide first-degree, if that's where it goes. There may be other charges."
