Silver thief strikes again in Buckhead

ATLANTA -

Investigators say a cat burglar who steals fine jewelry at night has struck again. A $40,000 cake plate is among the items stolen from a Buckhead mansion.

Authorities suspect that the thief has been able to strike in homes from New York to Atlanta without ever leaving a fingerprint.

Bonnie Perdue said that she spoke last night to her friends in Columbus who had also been burglarized, with another cake plate stolen.

"It turned out when they started asking family members, it came from actually the grandmother, and it was real silver. And so he apparently knew that. He left some other silver plate, but he took that piece, so he knows what he's doing," Perdue said.

Paul Brown, the owner of Gallery 63, an auction house featured on television, said that Atlanta isn't generally known for silver.

"In this country, the best silver markets are going to be in Charleston, South Carolina, New Orleans, Louisiana -- not really so much Atlanta," Brown said.  "It's an Old South thing. The people that collect that high-end sterling are people in those low country, Old South cities."

Some people in the silver business believe that the thief is keeping the silver or he's stealing it for a collector, as none of the pieces have shown up at auction houses or the open market.
