Local clergy react to George Zimmerman trial verdict

ATLANTA -

Local clergy believe some good can come from the controversial and tragic death of young Trayvon Martin.

They point to the passions expressed about the case and the possibility some of that energy can be redirected toward protecting young people, especially at risk-youth

Rev. Derrick Rice of Sandkofa United Church of Christ said that the death of the 17-year-old Florida teen should signal an alarm for adults with regard to protecting and engaging young people.

"If you are in anguish about what could happen to your child, what are the churches or basketball leagues or crews that are about building up strong black men, that create a hedge of protection if you will, that allows us to know the outside still has the dangers that will be unless some policies are implemented," Rice said.

Rice presides over a small congregation which borders where young black men attend college says what is required is hands on guidance from adults.

"I will…suggest that there are organizations and we are using the language loosely, but there are organizations that consistently do work that is tied to keeping what took place with Trayvon from happening," Rice said.

Rev. Dr. Joanna Adams of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta discussed the Florida case on a recent appearance on "Good Day Atlanta."

"Expressed one solidarity with the Martin family, just with the whole tragedy, so I think free expression is a big deal. However, if and when the demonstrations turn violent, then that is not a good thing," said Adams.

Adams said be concerned and passionate but do not be destruction.
