Salvation Army And Target Help Kids Shop For School Supplies

Posted: Updated:

We may be in the dog days of summer, but the start of the school year is fast-approaching.

The Salvation Army, and Target stores are teaming up to make sure kids have what they need in their backpack to get back to school.

8 year old Johnnie Cabrera is heading to third grade this fall.

He's excited for the new school year and spent the morning talking about it while he and 30 other students from the Chester area, picked out everything they need to make the grade.

"I got a pencil case, tissues, two packages of loose leaf paper," says Johnnie.

They're on a back-to-school shopping spree organized by Target and the Salvation Army, which gave kids from kindergarten through 12th grade an $80 gift card to buy supplies their families sometimes can't afford.

"To the parents, it means so much. It takes the weight off their shoulders..." says Major Ervin McCoy of the Salvation Army.

"It was such a blessing being on a fixed income with two kids one in high school and one in elementary school," reflects Cindia Campos, a parent.

15 year old Sierra Cabrera will be in the 10th grade at Ridley High. She's hoping the clothes she picked out today will help her make new friends.

"A little blouse and two pairs of pants," says Sierra Cabrera as she describes what she bought. "First year wasn't so good so I think this year I want to try to fit in."

Whether shopping for self esteem or just for a great start to a new school year, it was fun for the kids and took the pressure off for their parents.

"He tried on clothes, everything fit him well, he got everything he needed," says Cabrera's mother. "And the $80? We hit it exactly."
