There's a nibbler in us all; How much is too much?

Does this sound familiar?

You're making breakfast, so you nibble. Then you make lunch and you nibble some more. Before you know it, you've eaten some cheese and a few hand fulls of Goldfish crackers and some peanut M&M's.

Can nibbling really hijack your diet? The FOX Medical Team's Beth Galvin is here to shed some light on that.

Now, a little nibbling is fine. Constant nibbling? Not so much.

But, a lot of us aren't really aware of how much we eat when we nibble. That can add up to a problem if you're trying to get in shape.

Atlanta fitness trainer Karen Schrier says she's not going to rain on your snack parade; but, she says a lot of parents don't realize how much food they're actually eating when they clean their kid's plate.

"The kids finish their food and they're on the way to the sink. That inevitably still has food on it, and you're like, ‘Well, I'm not going to waste that!' And take a bite.  And before you know it, you've eaten more calories than you needed to be eating."

Karen says you need to make yourself aware how much you're nibbling. She suggests starting a food journal to see just how much extra food you're eating during a week. If you put it in your mouth, then you write it down – every bite.

"Even a notebook where you just write down, ‘Handful of cereal,' is fine to get people started.  Because just acknowledging, ‘Oh my gosh, I just ate another handful of cereal and I have to write it down again.' I think some people don't realize it until they write it down. And, then reviewing it at the end of the day and seeing, ‘Wow, that was a lot of handfuls of cereal.'"

If you tend to nibble while you cook, then make yourself a healthy snack before you get started. Or, keep fruit or vegetables nearby. And, put tempting food. Out of your sight.

When a snack attack hits, Karen says don't sweat it. Just nibble smarter.
