Woman says dog saved her from would-be robbers in E. Atlanta

ATLANTA -

A local woman who nearly became a victim of crime says she's had enough.

After numerous crime meetings and rallies -- some of them with city leaders and police –- some east Atlanta residents hoped it would make a difference. Instead, they feel like they're still being targeted.

Annelissa, who asked to be identified by only her first name, said that a young man tried to grab her Sunday afternoon as she was getting ready to walk into her house.  She noticed him and another person watching her from their vehicle.

"When I got out, I looked down at the road, and the person in the passenger side jumped out of the car and ran up to me with their hands kind of in their pants like they had a weapon and lunged at me, and I immediately started screaming," said Annelissa.

She ran away believing they were going to carjack or rob her. She thinks that they were afraid of dogs and left when her small Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix ran up to them.

"She ran up to them aggressively barking, which doesn't really surprise me," Annelissa said.

The incident happened in the middle of the afternoon, four days after a large crime meeting in which hundreds of neighbors came out seeking answers to the recent spate of crimes including murders, robberies and break-ins.

"I'm really disappointed that we don't do a better job in Atlanta of battling against the crime," Annelissa said.  "You see a city like New York that, in 20 years, kind of turned its image around and got a handle on their crime. If they can do it, why can't we in Atlanta?"

Annelise hopes police will still crack down on this crime but says one good thing has come out of it, in that she's much more aware.

She said that she believes her attempted attackers were actually teenagers, possibly 14 or 15 years old. They were driving a red sedan that police say may have been involved in a carjacking earlier in the weekend.
