WASHINGTON (KMSP) -

One of the top aides to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has been arrested in connection with a string of thefts at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill.

FOX News reported Monday that Javier Sanchez, a senior legislative assistant to the congresswoman, was arrested on Thursday and charged with "Theft II."

At this time, it is unclear what a charge of "Theft II" entails. No details of the nature of the thefts were immediately disclosed; however, the newspaper Roll Call cited an unidentified source claiming the theft involved cash from the congresswoman's office. Capitol police confirmed they began investigating the thefts earlier this year.

Sanchez was hired in January and was considered one of Bachmann's closest aides, frequently escorting her to and from meetings.

Chad Pergram, of FOX News, said via Twitter that Sanchez pleaded not guilty to the charges in court in Washington, D.C., when he was arraigned last week. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26.

Sanchez, 37, of Virginia, was often seen with Bachmann around the Capitol building and the Rayburn House Office Building, which is where her congressional office is located. The two were seen together several times last week, but Bachmann's office said he was no longer employed as of Friday.

Bachmann plans to retire from Congress in 2014. When explaining why she does not plan to run again in a video on YouTube, she said, "The law limits anyone from serving as president of the United States for more than eight years, and in my opinion, well, eight years is also long enough for an individual to serve as a representative for a specific Congressional district."

Bachmann insisted her decision had nothing to do with the ethics probe into alleged misconduct regarding the campaign finances of her presidential campaign.
