Only 6 apply for polygamous board of trustees

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah court officials say only six people have applied for a board of trustees that would be given control of a state-run trust that once belonged to Warren Jeffs' polygamist sect on the Arizona-Utah border.

Utah courts spokeswoman Nancy Volmer says there were six applications submitted by Thursday's deadline.

Court officials will now review the applications and decide if they want to extend the deadline in hopes of attracting more applicants.

Bruce Wisan, a Salt Lake City accountant overseeing the trust, said it holds 750 homes and a scattering of other properties estimated to be worth $118 million.

Utah seized control of the trust in 2005 over allegations of mismanagement by Jeffs and other leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
