Ga troops return from Afghan deployment

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - About 100 members of the Georgia Army National Guard are back home following a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.

Family and friends greeted members of the 179th Military Police Company during a welcoming ceremony in Savannah on Friday.

The Savannah Morning News reports Army Spc. Steve Weber had never met his 2-month-old son because he was serving in the war. He stared at the child after taking him from wife Jannah Weber for the first time.

None of the unit's soldiers was seriously injured during the deployment. Leaders are commending the military police officers for their roles in countless security and combat missions.

The 179th Military Police are 1 of 4 subordinate companies that comprise the Georgia Guard's 170th Military Police Battalion.
