Seeds, mulch to help prevent post-fire flooding

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - Forest officials plan to seed and apply mulch to areas of the Prescott National Forest recently scarred by a wildfire.

The work will help reduce the risk of flooding that officials say increases dramatically in the aftermath of a wildfire. An emergency response team completed an initial assessment this week to determine which areas were most at risk.

The Doce Fire was fully contained Thursday after burning 10.5 square miles of dense brush and timber in the Granite Mountain Wilderness, about seven miles northwest of Prescott. More than 460 homes in the valleys below had been evacuated.

Officials are urging those residents to get a weather radio and monitor weather reports.

Investigators say the Doce Fire was human caused but haven't determined the exact source.
