POTOMAC, Md. -

The female kayaker killed Thursday at Great Falls is identified as Shannon Christy, age 23, of Greenville, South Carolina.

Assistant Chief Scott Graham says rescuers searched the river after receiving a report of two kayakers in trouble on Thursday afternoon. He says they were able to reach one man, but they could not find the woman.

Montgomery County Police said Friday that the woman was trying to kayak down the falls and was pinned under the water.

A group of fellow kayakers worked with the fire department to recover the woman's body from the river.

Chuck Thornton, an organizer of this weekend's Great Falls Race for kayakers, says Christy had come to town to participate in the race.

On her blog, Christy writes about her job in the marketing department of Confluence Watersports. Her love of kayaking clearly comes through.

In a statement Active Nature, the organizers of the race said:

In response to this tragedy, the 2013 Great Falls Race is cancelled so that the kayaking community and Shannon’s friends and family can gather at Great Falls Park, Virginia at 11am, Saturday, July 13 to hold a memorial service to honor Shannon.  All other Potomac River Festival activities will proceed as scheduled.

Shannon Christy loved kayaking and it is through kayaking that we honor her memory.  Donations to the family can be made through a link at the following website: http://www.anadventures.com/
