PRESCOTT, Wis. (KMSP) -

Prescott police arrested an 18-year-old Prescott, Wis., man for allegedly punching a pregnant woman in the stomach in attempt to murder the unborn child on Wednesday.

Police Chief Mike R. Bondarenko said the man has been arrested on attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child and domestic battery of the 27-year-old Prescott woman  carrying the child.

Officers were alerted to a possible miscarriage at a Prescott motel around 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday. Bondarenko said the woman had been staying at the motel with the 18-year-old, who is allegedly the father of the unborn child.

"The couple, who are not married, had been involved in a domestic argument. During the argument, the man allegedly struck the woman in the stomach several times in order to cause a miscarriage and end the pregnancy," Bondarenko said.

The woman was brought to a Hastings, Minn., hospital for treatment. Her condition and the condition of the unborn child has not been released.

The 18-year-old is currently sitting in the Pierce County Jail pending charges.
