6 hurt in ‘suspicious' South Shore apartment fire

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Fire Department officials said the cause of an apartment building fire that injured six people in the South Shore neighborhood is "suspicious."

The fire "will be investigated as suspicious based on witness statements and evidence," according to Fire Media Affairs.

The fire at the four-story building in the 7100 block of South Jeffery Boulevard started shortly before 11 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs.

Emergency crews at to rescue several people from upper floors who could not otherwise make it out of the building, Fire Media Affairs said.

Six people were hurt and taken to area hospitals, but none suffered life-threatening injuries, fire officials said. The flames were extinguished about 11:15 p.m.
