Seven-year-old Xavier Battle is still in the hospital in fair condition after being hit by a suspected drunk driver in St. Paul on Tuesday night.
The boy's mother Laketa Buice showed FOX 9 where the boy was hit and dragged for 20 feet, and doesn't think this will be the last incident at the intersection of Bedford Street and Payne Avenue.
The accident happened just in front of her home, and she told FOX 9 the driver was drunk and got out of the car a few feet after hitting the boy, checking the condition of her SUV. But 39-year-old Kristina Jackson didn't bother to look back to check on the boy.
"My son looked her in the eye, this is what he told me, he seen her. So you know you hit my baby, stop! Find out what's going on," Buice said.
"Then he was drug under the car, until right here, and he was ejected from under the vehicle this is where he was actually laying," she said of the incident.
After Buice watched the terror, as she ran to Xavier's side, and said Jackson got out of the car once she got to the stop sign just 150 feet from the scene to inspect her car.
"To me, she stopped because the car wasn't going how it needs to go because his bike was lodged under there."
St. Paul police said they caught Jackson 10 minutes after the incident, less than a mile away. She hit a .23 BAC – almost 3 times the legal limit. Jackson doesn't necessarily have the cleanest record, either.
In 2003, she was charged with check forgery, and in 2007, she was caught driving without and insurance. Jackson pled guilty to both charges.
Xavier has 40 stitches in his head, skin scraped off his legs and fractured bones in his back, but no spine injuries. He remains in fair condition at Gillette Children's Hospital. Buice hopes police will continue patrolling the Payne and Bedford intersection, where there's a Morrelli's Market and liquor store. She says she's witnessed "drunks coming in and out all day, speeding, not caring about our kids that are on this street."
"I try to look over it and know that those red marks show there is a god and my baby is okay," Buice said.
Kristina Jackson is currently booked in the Ramsey County jail under criminal vehicle operation. Charges are expected Thursday. Police are still waiting on test results to learn Jackson's exact blood alcohol content, so they can move forward in charging her.
Buice said her son is expected to make a full recovery. Once he's all healed up, he'll get to go to Chicago to visit his grandma -- a trip he was very much looking forward to.
