House, In Process Of Being Raised, Collapses In Egg Harbor Township

Posted: Updated:

The owners of an Egg Harbor Township home were in the final stages of fixing their house after it was gutted by Superstorm Sandy.

Contractors were hired to raise it 10 feet above ground. They were inches away from finishing the job when the entire house fell.

For the last 2 weeks Rosalie Blois has been watching contractors raise the house across the street.

Today something went terribly wrong. The 2 story beach home on Kansas Road came crashing down.

"Two or three guys came running out and down came that one side and the rest of it followed. And it was like oh my god," remembers Blois.

Egg Harbor Township officials say contractors were raising the home 10 feet above ground after damage from Superstorm Sandy.

Before the collapse, the house's roof was just as high as the house next door. Neighbors say contractors told them it was just two inches from being completely raised when the whole house just dropped.

"It was a super loud crash. It's like I knew instantly what happened. I said the house just fell and me and my son just ran outside," says Linda Brown.

Police say three contractors escaped with injuries, none thought to be life threatening.

OSHA inspectors have arrived on scene to figure out how this happened. The family who owns the house is on their way from their home in North Jersey.
