Co-sponsor of concealed carry law to resign, move to Texas

MORRIS, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Republican State Rep. Pam Roth is resigning her post sometime next month to move to Texas.

Roth's husband, Steve Roth, is being transferred by Fluor, where he works, to manage a $600 million construction project near Houston, the legislator from Morris said Wednesday.

Steve Roth could have commuted home to Illinois once a month, but Pam Roth said she wanted to keep her family together, so she agreed to give up her post. The couple have two sons, ages 12 and 14.

"So we made the tough decision," she said.

Their Morris home went on the market Monday.

Roth, 43, said it will be tough to go because she believes she was just hitting her stride in the Legislature.

"I thoroughly loved my job," she said.

She was a co-sponsor of the new concealed carry firearms law. And Roth, a CPA, said she enjoyed working on the budget.

"Working on the budget across the aisle with my colleagues has been huge," she said.

While she's excited to be moving to a state with a booming economy, she still hopes Illinois can resolve its pension mess and get its financial house in order. Otherwise it will continue to "spiral south," she said.

Roth is a former Saratoga School District 60C Board president. She grew up in Iowa and has lived in Morris since 1998.

She was appointed state rep in January 2011 to fill a vacancy left by Sue Rezin of Morris. Rezin left her House seat before she was sworn in to fill a vacancy created when former State Sen. Gary Dahl, R-Granville, resigned.

Roth won her election against Jeremy Ly in November.

Now it will be up to Republican Party chairmen from Kendall, Grundy, Will and LaSalle counties to appoint her replacement, who would be expected to run in the 2014 election.

The 75th Legislative District stretches from Plano to the north, to Minooka to the east, to Braidwood and Dwight to the south, and to Marseilles to the west.
