Group calls for Cherokee school board member to resign

Posted: Updated:

A group of citizens is calling for the resignation of a Cherokee County School Board member.

Kelly Marlow has only been on the school board for six months, but has already stirred up a lot of controversy.

Last month, she filed a complaint with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) about the superintendent and the school board.

A group calling themselves SCRAM -- Smart Citizens Rally Against Marlow – formed to urge Marlow to rescind the letter.

"If the investigation proceeds, that right there alone…could affect everyone," said teacher Jennifer Bowling.

The drama further intensified this weekend when Marlow, her political advisor Robert Trim, and county Republican Party official Barbara Knowles were arrested for allegedly making false statements. They filed a police report alleging that Cherokee County Superintendent Frank R. Petruzielo tried to run over them with his car as they were leaving a restaurant on Main Street.

Petruzielo issued a statement saying, "This is a very serious allegation that has no basis in fact."

Attorney Tony Morgese, who represents all three accused officials, said his clients are not guilty.
"My clients are in shock that they would bring these types of charges." Morgese.
Teacher Aimee Hannon and others in SCRAM said they originally just wanted Marlow to rescind her complaint she filed with SACS, now they want her out.
"Our children have nothing to gain from her serving on our school bard," said Hannon.

SACS officials confirmed that they did receive a complaint from Marlow, but said they had not taken any action yet.
