SpaceX's Grasshopper Rocket Launches to New Heights

Posted: Updated:
SpaceX has released amazing video of the June 14 test of its Grasshopper rocket. The California based company said it soared over 1,000 feet during its latest trial run in June and smoothly made it back down to the pad. The rocket flew 1066 feet which is about 100 stories high after liftoff in Texas at a rocket development facility. This breaks its previous record height of 840 feet.

This test had an additional higher accuracy sensor which made for a more precise landing than in previous tests.

The Grasshopper is a 10-story Vertical Takeoff Vertical Landing (VTVL) vehicle designed to test the technologies needed to return a rocket back to Earth intact. While most rockets are designed to burn up on atmosphere reentry, SpaceX rockets can withstand the intense heat of re-entry without burning up, so that it can be used again.
