Governor appoints review panel in indicted DeKalb CEO case

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed a review panel to determine if indicted DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis will remain in office.

Rockdale County CEO Richard A. Oden and Clayton County Commission Chairman Jeffery Turner were named to the review panel on Monday by Deal.  Under law, Attorney General Sam Olens will fill the third position.

Ellis was indicted on 15 counts in June. The  indictment accuses Ellis of trying to extort campaign contributions from companies and their employees. The indictment also alleges that Ellis instructed the county's director of purchasing and contracting to prevent certain companies from getting business because they didn't respond to his solicitations and didn't contribute to his campaign.

Ellis has denied any wrongdoing.

The panel has 14 days to review the case and make a recommendation to the governor.
