A morning fire has destroyed a boat house on the east side of Christmas Lake. The two-level structure located just off the water was fully engulfed and firefighters had a tough time getting water down to the location.
"Like every incident, you need to have a plan A, and a plan B, and a contingency to go along with that," said Excelsior Fire District Chief Scott Gerber. "We certainly utilized some of those contingencies today."
There are no hydrants in that area of Shorewood, which made the fight a full tanker operation. Adding to the difficulty, narrow roads posed a challenge for crews trying to access the property.
"Access is tough," said Gerber. "As you guys saw, the roads are basically one-way in, one-way out. It's extremely difficult to operate. Shuttling firefighters in and out has been a challenge for us."
The structure on the property assessed at $2.2 million has been declared a total loss. There is no word on the cause of the fire but the investigation continues.
