Dogs mistakenly euthanized in Douglas County

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

Officials say human error is to blame for the death of a Douglas County woman's two dogs.

Cheryl Bohannon said her dogs, Fendi and Coco, escaped from her yard and were picked up by animal control.

After Bohannon tracked her pets down at the shelter, she told officials there that she would pick them up. But by the time she arrived, they had already been euthanized.

"She says, ‘I'm so sorry, it was not our fault,'" said Bohannon.

Douglas County says it happened when they sent the dogs to an outside animal hospital because one of the dogs had an eye infection.

"The vet did not read the paperwork; she just put them down," said Bohannon.

Dr. Julie Lugar, the veterinarian that the hospital sent the dogs to, told FOX 5's Denise Dillon that she takes full responsibility for what happened. She says it was a horrible mistake.

She told Bohannon the same thing and offered to give her two other dogs.

"I said, ‘You can't replace the dogs that I lost," said Bohannon.

Bohannon's daughter Chertrease once worked as a vet tech and said she doesn't understand what went wrong.

"The first thing you do is you look at that chart," Chertrease said.

The Bohannons buried the dogs together in their backyard, with a small ceremony.

Cheryl says the only thing that will help her heal is time.

"I'm just trying to deal with it and get over it and make sense of it," she said.

County officials say they will be following up with the animal hospital to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.
