DETROIT (WJBK) -

When Sabrina Malak returned home on Tuesday, she knew something was wrong. Her screen door was unlocked and her window was busted open.

"I turned the key, went inside and all of my dogs were gone, and a few things were out of place," she said.

Two poodles and three Yorkies were all missing.

"They're so happy to see me when I do come home that they run to me," Malak said. "That was missing, and my heart just like went to my feet."

Malak told police she suspects her ex-boyfriend. Bitter after the break-up, she believes he may have convinced her neighbors to play a cruel joke. Officers followed up on tips, but so far the dogs have not been located or returned.

The Fourth of July is Malak's birthday. While many of us are celebrating, she will be preparing for surgery on Friday. She is recovering from breast cancer and also needs a bone marrow transplant. She never wanted to go through this alone.

"It's hard to be stress free or not worry when your pets are gone," Malak said. "Some people treat their dogs just like family, and when my dogs were taken, it was just like you were taking my kids."

"I haven't been able to sleep. I've been worried."

Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit police.
