DETROIT (WJBK) -

58-year-old Willie Drain was killed by a speeding driver in a stolen car that blew a stop sign and crashed into him at Nevada and Gable on Detroit's east side Tuesday afternoon.

"The vehicle was originally spotted on Seven Mile by a uniformed officer, but it was traveling at a high rate of speed. He didn't pursue it, but he informed dispatch that there was a car in the area traveling at a high rate of speed," said Lieutenant Anthony Topp.

Drain had left his mechanic job at Safeway Transportation and was supposed to be home between 3:30 and 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. When he didn't show, his wife got worried, and then she got a call from the hospital.

"It's just really unfair for a beautiful person like that to lose his life because of some idiots out here," said wife Mary Drain.

"Find out he died because somebody stole somebody else's car and ran the stop sign," said sister Judy Drain.

"The hospital said he died instantly," said nephew Keith Drain.

A family has been torn apart. Drain had a grandchild and five grown children, one who is serving in the military. She was called home from Japan to bury her father.

As for the suspects, a young man is now under arrest. He was chased down by an off-duty officer, who just happened to be nearby.

"She was in the area and saw what happened, followed him down Gable and then made the arrest with the help of some other officers," Topp said.

Police are still searching for another man and asking for the public's help.

Meanwhile, Drain's family is asking the new police chief for help for the city.

"He needs to do something about the city because it's messed up," said brother-in-law Bobby Hamilton.
