Lady Liberty to reopen July 4

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Statue of Liberty will be open on July 4, the first time since superstorm Sandy ravaged the Tristate region.

Lady Liberty was closed for renovations for about one year.  It reopened on October 28 and was forced to close one day later after an eight foot surge of water washed over Liberty Island.

The statue was not badly damaged but the electrical system, sewage and boiler systems had to be shut down for repairs.

A reopening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Officials including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell are expected to attend the event.

Security screenings for anyone wanting to visit Liberty Island will be set up at Battery Park and will be similar to airport screenings.

Ellis Island remains closed from damage caused by Sandy.
