A woman has revealed she may have been the last person to talk with Terrence Franklin -- she said they'd been dating for a couple months. Within a couple hours, Terrence would be dead.
"He was really, really, really scared. I had never heard him sound like that," the girlfriend said, who asked not to be named.
She'd loaned Franklin her car to run errands, when police stopped him for a suspected burglary.
Police say Franklin nearly ran over an officer, later ditching his car and fleeing on foot.
While fleeing, Franklin called the girlfriend and told her where she could find the car. He then called a second time when he broken into a home on Bryant Avenue South.
"He told me was in someone's basement. And I was like, ‘who's basement' and he said, "I don't know,'" she said.
When she arrived on scene, she says on officer placed her in the back of a squad car, where she listened to events unfold over the police scanner.
"I heard officer down, twice, and then I heard suspect down," she said. "Behind me I see police officers as well as people in the neighborhood celebrating, giving high fives and clapping."
FOX 9 went back to the scene to corroborate her story. Neighbors say it was a somber scene. One neighbor did say when an injured officer came out of the house, people did clap – applauding his heroism.
Detectives took the girlfriend to give a statement, where hours later she would find out Franklin died.
Even in her grief, she admits none of this would have happened if Franklin simply would have given up.
But she also believes police overreacted – an allegedly unarmed man versus a SWAT team in a dark basement.
"Terrence did what he did out of fear, and they did what they did out of anger," she said.
Minneapolis police are generally not commenting on the case, which is going before a grand jury, However, a police spokesperson told FOX 9 on Tuesday they're unaware of any celebration when Franklin was killed.
They believe the only reaction may have been when police learned that the two officers who were shot were going to survive.
