The real reality for dance moms

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

They're dedicated, dynamic dancers and they've all got proud moms.

"It's a very big commitment," said Vickie Gonzalez, mother of 16-year-old dancer Melissa.

Kate Lazarra has two daughters in dance: 13-year-old Riley and 10-year-old Reese.

"Ballet, contemporary, tap, jazz, hip hop," she explained.

"This Eva and this is her third year dancing," said dance mom Doreen Fernandez, as her 6-year-old hammed it up for the camera.

They're all mothers who spend lots of hours at the Extreme Dance Studio in Tampa, where their daughters are learning all the moves to take to competition.

"I think it's human nature to want to allow your kids to do something that you wish you did growing up," said Kate.

However, what you see at this studio is nothing like the reality show "Dance Moms," where real-life dance drama unfolds at Abby Lee's studio in Pittsburgh.

"It's a lot of spiteful and hate going on and that's not at all what it is here at all," Doreen explained.

Co-owner and dance teach Roxana Sanchez is a fan of the show.

"Religiously, I watch it, actually."

Yet, she knows she can't treat her dance moms the way Abby Lee does.

"I think that's very scripted, because if you were really like that, you probably wouldn't have anyone at your studio," Sanchez continued.

She wants her moms to be supportive and involved -- not just for their own daughters, but for each other. After all, these moms spend a lot of time together.

"One hour a week turned into three, turned into six, turned into 10. And before you knew it, dance was really my life outside of work," Vickie explained.

Kate added, "Well, I've cut back my hours, so I'm able to pick them up from school, rush home, do homework, change clothes for dance and rush back to the studio for two and three hours a night."

The time is not the only cost.

"You have to tie in cost of tights, cost for the makeup, cost for the jewelry," said Sanchez.

Tiptoeing around dealing with the girls and their moms isn't always easy, but these moms say, the reality is, it's worth it.

"I mean, it's part of being a mom," Kate added.
