Tough early schedule to set tone for Vikings

Posted: Updated:

The Minnesota Vikings will report to training camp in a little more than two weeks and over the course of the next two weeks, we will break down the story lines and position battles heading into camp.

The first quarter of the schedule will test the team with back-to-back division games on the road against Detroit and Chicago as well as a trip to London to play Pittsburgh in week four in Wembley Stadium.

With the bye week early (week five), the next four games aren't any easier. Home games against Cam Newton and the Panthers as well as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers await the team as do two road games against the Giants and Cowboys to close out the first half of the season.

The second half of the schedule starts with a pair of dual threat quarterbacks as Robert Griffin III and the Redskins come to Mall of America Field followed by a trip to the Puget Sound to face Russell Wilson and the Seahawks. Then it's back to division games with a road trip to Green Bay to end November and the Bears at MOA Field to begin December.

The final four games appear (at least on paper) to favor the Vikings. A road trip to play the Super Bowl champs begin the final quarter, but home games against Philadelphia and Detroit and a road trip to Cincinnati should provide a positive end to the 2013 season.

Playoffs?

Maybe, but we'll get to that later. As the old cliché goes, we're taking it one game at a time.
