Search For Little Boy Now A Recovery Mission

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The search for the little boy has been called off for the night. Police are now calling this a recovery mission.

The boy was last seen jumping into the swollen waters of Pennypack Creek with his brother.

His brother made it to land, but he is still missing.

While police comb the banks of Pennypack Creek tonight, family members of the missing boy from Northeast Philadelphia are holding vigil. Praying for any sign of the 13 year old.

"They got swept down the river to this part by the falls. Both went over, one came back up, the other we could not find," says Philadelphia Fire Department Chief Robert Coyne.

Fire officials say that just before two p.m. this afternoon, two brothers aged 11 and 13 years old, jumped off the bridge to go swimming.

Both boys went over the falls but only the 11 year old came back.

After 2 hours of search and rescue in the rain-swelled Pennypack, even a fire department diver had to be rescued.

"The current was very swift; our rescuers had a tough time coming upstream against the current," says Coyne.

Locals say kids have been jumping off the Pennypack Creek Bridge for years. Just two weeks ago two teens had to be rescued from the creek. But today the summertime fun may have turned tragic.

"Kids love to jump off of it and into the water but you are not supposed to. There are 'no swimming' signs, but people take them down and ignore them," says Jim Hunsberger from the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.
