Boy hit by car at rest stop on Minn.-Iowa border

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KMSP) -

A 10-year-old boy from North Carolina was hit by a car Sunday afternoon at a rest area off Interstate 35 at the Minnesota-Iowa border.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the State Line Rest Area in Freeborn County.

The boy, identified as Ashton Philyaw, was not seriously hurt. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. for treatment.

The driver of the car, a 59-year-old Center City, Minn. man, was not injured and remained at the scene. No alcohol was detected and the driver was cooperative with investigators.

Last month, a pedestrian was struck and killed at a rest area of Interstate 35 in Mahtowa, Minn. The driver involved in that crash – a 55-year-old man from Duluth, Minn. – fled the scene but was later arrested for DWI and criminal vehicular homicide.
