Delays at O’Hare and Midway due to fire alarm

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

O'Hare International and Midway airports experienced flight delays Monday after a fire alarm at an FAA air traffic control facility.

A fire alarm went off at 8:03 a.m. at FAA TRACON, an air traffic control facility in Elgin, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said in a statement. Water was flowing into the pipes of the sprinkler system.

Water was not discharged but due to the alarm, the FAA facility in Aurora took over TRACON airspace, Cory said. The facility in Elgin was evacuated until 8:30 a.m.

Pilots were in communication with air traffic controllers at all times, Cory said.

There was no fire or structural damage to the facility, and the local fire department helped shut off the alarm, Cory said.

There were flight delays of up to 30 minutes at O'Hare and Midway, Cory said. Eight flights were diverted from O'Hare and Midway to other airports, possibly for fuel.

Flights have now resumed normal schedules, Cory said.

The FAA is investigating the cause of the alarm.
