WILLMAR, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Willmar, Minn. man has been charged in connection with two flag-burning incidents that occurred in downtown Willmar on June 1.

Jeffrey James Ackerman, 40, was charged on June 28 with two counts of fifth-degree arson.

Ackerman told police he "wasn't against America" but did it out of "anger and emotions."

Willmar Police Chief David Wyffels told the West Central Tribune that the two burning incidents occurred after 1 a.m. on June 1 -- one at Kitchen Fair along the 300 block of Fifth Street Southwest and the other at Midas Auto along the 700 block of Litchfield Avenue Southwest. Ackerman lives within a few blocks of the area.

"I think anybody who lives in the United States knows the symbolism of the United States flag," said Bruce Dexter of Kitchen Fair.
