RYE, Ariz. -

Five mobile homes and a shed have been destroyed during a fire that started at a motorcycle salvage yard.

The Bicycle Fire, as it's being called, reportedly started on All Bike property, which has been around since 1988.

It spread quickly, causing evacuation and concern that it could grow out of control.

"I went in to let my dog out and I kept the palm tree from burning. When they drug me out of there, it didn't take long. The palm tree caught up and it just it was bad," said Ron Adler, All Bikes owner.

Adler says he didn't want to leave his property when fire started spreading through the thousands of antique bicycles, motorcycles and cars he owns.

It was around 8:30 p.m. Saturday when firefighters first arrived.

"The residence towards the back was fully involved when we got here," said Payson Fire Battalion Chief Dan Bramble.

According to Bramble, it took several agencies four hours to gain control of the bicycle fire; it burned for 12.

Water had to be brought in from Payson.

Two-acres and five mobile homes were destroyed.

The area behind the property was a major concern.

"There is really nothing in between this and Payson...except for forest. If this got away from us then we're off to the races and we didn't want that," said Bramble.

"I could see flames when I come down off the hill out of Payson," said Sgt. David Horning, with Gila County Sheriff's Office.

Horning says a number of propane tanks exploded as a result.

40 people sought refuge inside a shelter set up by the Red Cross and seven spent the night, including Adler, who hopes to rebuild.

"Hang in there. There's a lot of bikes that are still savable and cars that are still on the property that can be redone," said Adler.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

State Route 87 is open to traffic despite the fire.
