Leinenkugel's annual cleanup boasts record attendance

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) and the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company hosted its seventh annual effort to clean up Minnehaha Creek and areas near Lake Hiawatha Park.

On Sunday, an estimated 1,200 volunteers cleared 4,200 pounds of garbage and debris from recent storms -- beating the original two-ton goal -- enjoyed free breakfast and heard an address from fifth-generation brewer John Leinenkugel.

Leinie's has collected a sizeable Minnesota fan base, and in partnership with Metro Blooms, the "Canoes for a Cause" initiative looks to spread the message about the importance of pure, clean water -- Wisconsin beer fan or not, Minnesota loves its lakes and rivers, and this year's event drew its largest crowd in seven years.
