Texting 911 does not work in Minnesota

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

If you need help, do not text 911. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is issuing a reminder that the technology to text 911 is not available in most of the U.S., including Minnesota.

On July 1, four cell phone carriers will provide text-to-911 "bounce-back" messages: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

The Federal Communications Commission expects nationwide ability to text 911 by May 15, 2014. However, consumers will always be encouraged to make phone calls for 911.
