Bruno: Daulton Had Trouble Speaking Before Diagnosis

PHILADELPHIA -

There was sad news about a very popular former catcher for the Phillies.

Darren Daulton, leader of the 1993 National League pennant-winning Phils, has two brain tumors.

He is scheduled for surgery early next week.

Radio station 97.5 "The Fanatic," which hosts Daulton's radio show, broke the news to fans in a statement Thursday, saying he "has not been feeling well over the past two weeks."

Joining "Good Day Philadelphia" on Friday morning to talk more about the situation was Tony Bruno from "The Fanatic." You can watch his interview in the video clip above.

"You know, we all know Dutch. We know all him from the '93 Phillies, and the 'Macho Row,' and Dutch has become a good friend. He's a neighbor. So, when I found out the news yesterday morning, actually, before the station released it, we were all trying to figure out what will people say, how do we handle this?"

"And obviously he's not feeling well," Bruno said. "Monday he was on his last radio show, the 6 to 7 p.m. show 'Talking Baseball,' and he was having trouble speaking. And so people were saying, 'What's going on?' So, the management suggested that he go to Bryn Mawr Hospital to get checked out, and he did. And unfortunately they found the two tumors."

Bruno said he had heard that the surgery will be Monday.

Daulton's girlfriend, Amanda, told Bruno that the former All-Star catcher wanted everyone to know that he's really positive and to send positive vibes.

The radio station has set up an email address where people can do just that. The address is Dutch@975thefanatic.com.

That address had receive more than 2,000 emails within hours of the announcement of Daulton's forthcoming surgery, and Bruno pledged that all of those messages will be forwarded.

"Dutch is going to be fine. Just be positive, and Amanda said that he's as positive as he always is, and he knows he's going to get through this," Bruno said. "... And anybody who knows Darren knows he's one of the most positive, likable guys."

More than 10,000 people have "Liked" a FOX 29 Philadelphia Facebook post encouraging "Prayers for Dutch."

Other Facebook tribute pages are popping up encouraging use of the Twitter hashtags #PrayersForDutch, #GetWellDutch and #RightOnFightOn, referring to Daulton's oft-used response to fans and radio show callers.

Dr. Mike also discussed treatment for brain tumors Friday morning on "Good Day Philadelphia."
