A panel appointed by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has recommended that Rep. Tyrone Brooks not be suspended from office.

The panel met Friday morning to review charges against Brooks, an Atlanta Democrat. A 30-count indictment handed down against Brooks last month alleges he siphoned nearly $1 million from charitable organizations under his leadership over the course of 17 years.  Brooks has denied those allegations and pleaded not guilty to wire, mail and tax fraud charges.

Last week, Deal appointed the Democratic minority leaders of the House and Senate, Rep. Stacey Abrams and Sen. Steve Henson, to the panel.  Attorney General Sam Olens, a Republican, is also on the panel.

The Governor's office says the decision was unanimous.  According to the report sent to Governor Deal, "After hearing from interested parties and reviewing the federal indictment, the Commission determines that the indictment against Representative Brooks does not relate to the performance or activities of the office of Georgia State Representatives."
