CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A woman and her 5-year-old son were murdered at their Back of the Yards neighborhood home early Friday.

Police said the two were found shot to death inside a house in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue about 2:40 a.m. Their deaths are being investigated as homicides.

Relatives, gathered at dawn on the edge of the crime scene, identified the 31-year-old woman as Chevonne Brown. The 5-year-old was identified as Sterling Sims, the youngest of Brown's two boys.  An older brother, 12, was at home and called police.

Relatives said Brown lived with her mother until about three months ago when she moved in with a boyfriend who lives on the block where the murders occurred.

"I'm in pain. I'm in shock," said Doris Sims, the boy's paternal grandmother. "He was just a really nice kid."

She described Brown as a dedicated mother who put her children first.

"She loved her kids. Anytime you'd see her she was with her kids."

Sims was about to start kindergarten, relatives said.
